Artwork

My work investigates Black hair as both material and method within a world structured by anti-Blackness, where Black being is routinely regulated, aestheticized, and denied full belonging. Hair, in its presence and absence, is a site where survival, care, and imagination are negotiated under these conditions. I treat hair practices as living archives that hold embodied knowledge, ancestral memory, and strategies for enduring and reimagining life beyond imposed limits and dominant systems.

Through sculpture, ink-based abstraction, and participatory installations, I translate the gestures and labor of Black hair care into visual and spatial forms. Working with materials that evoke hair's tactile and temporal qualities, pigments, synthetic fibers, and residue, I study how Black aesthetic labor generates meaning inside and outside of dominant systems of recognition. These works trace intimacy and process as forms of knowledge production rather than representation.

Grounded in Black feminist thought and ethics of care, my practice asks what art can do when freedom is not assumed to be available. I approach the studio, the page, and gathering as sites of translation, where embodied experience becomes collective inquiry. Across formats, I treat art as a portal- a way to confront the conditions that deny Black safety and belonging while practicing alternative ways of being, remembering, and imagining more livable worlds.
